A2BP1 / FOX1 (ataxin 2 binding protein 1)contains a highly conserved RNP motif that is common among RNA binding proteins. It regulates alternative splicing events by binding to 5'-UGCAUGU-3' elements. A2BP1 / FOX1 regulates the alternative splicing of tissue specific expnes and of differentially spliced exons during erythropoiesis. Ataxin 2, the gene product of the SCA2 gene, is assoicated with a number of familial neurodegenerative diseases. A2BP1 / FOX1 binds to the C terminus of ataxin 2 and may constribute to the pathology of spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2). In addition to its localisation within the nucleus, A2BP1 / FOX1 localises to the trans Golgi network with Ataxin 2.
