ADAT1 is a member of the ADAR (Adenosine Deaminase Acting on RNA) family. Using site-specific adenosine modification, these proteins participate in the pre-MRNA editing of nuclear transcripts. ADAT1 (tRNA-specific adenosine deaminase 1), is responsible for the deamination of adenosine 37 to inosine in eukaryotic tRNA. RNA editing, such as that carried out by the ADAR family, is a process by which a single gene can produce a number of closely related but distinct proteins. It plays a critical role in the expression of certain gene products by changing the sequence context of mRNAs, which results in synthesis of proteins not encoded in the gene sequence. Recent studies suggest that disruptions in RNA editing may play a role in certain forms of depression and schizophrenia.
