Bag1 is a multifunctional protein that blocks apoptosis and interacts with several types of proteins. These include the Bcl 2 family proteins, the kinase Raf 1, certain tyrosine kinase growth factor receptors, and steroid hormone receptors, possibly by virtue of its ability to regulate the Hsp70 / Hsc70 family of molecular chaperones. Bag1 binds the ATPase domains of Hsp70 and Hsc70, modulating their chaperone activity and functioning as a competitive antagonist of the co chaperone Hip. Human BAG 1 (hBAG 1) cDNA is identical to a hormone receptor binding protein RAP46. Human Bag1 protein displays different isoforms of 36 kDa, 46 kDa, and 50 kDa.
