Relevance

C3a (des Arg) is formed upon cleavage of C3 into C3a and C3b. Complement component C3 plays a central role in the activation of complement system. Its activation is required for both classical and alternative complement activation pathways. People with C3 deficiency are susceptable to bacteria infection.
Complement C3a is rapidly inactivated by serum carboxypeptidase N which removes the C-terminal arginine residue generating C3a (desArg).
