Claudin 10 is a member of the claudin superfamily. These proteins, which include claudin 1 through 18, are important structural and functional components of tight junctions in paracellular transport. Tight junction strands serve as a physical barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the paracellular space between epithelial or endothelial cell sheets. Claudins, which consist of four transmembrane domains and two extracellular loops, make up tight junction strands. CLAUDIN 10 has a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through calcium-independent cell-adhesion activity. Claudin 10 expression in Hepatocellular carcinoma can be used as a molecular marker for disease recurrence after curative hepatectomy.
