Specificity
Specifically reactive in the middle/upper suprabasal layers (stratum spinosum/granulosum) of the epidermis of palm and sole. CK9 can be detected in primary cultures of palmoplantar keratinocytes when they shift to differentiation-promoting conditions and grow stratified (upper cells). CK9 has not been found in epithelial cells of other stratified epithelia such as oesophagus or complex epithelia (e.g. urothelium) or in ductal or simple epithelia. Negative tissues include: muscle, liver and duodenum. -

, corresponding to amino acids 450 - 477 of Human Cytokeratin 9. Synthetic peptide: RQFSSSYLTS GGGGGGGLGS GGSIR, corresponding to amino acids 4 - 28 of Human Cytokeratin 9. -
General notes
Isotypes IgG1 (Ks9.70) and IgG3 (Ks9.216)The antibody cocktail is an excellent new tool to characterize primary cultures of keratinocytes/skin transplants for application in burn treatment.

Function
May serve an important special function either in the mature palmar and plantar skin tissue or in the morphogenetic program of the formation of these tissues. Plays a role in keratin filament assembly. -
Tissue specificity
Expressed in the terminally differentiated epidermis of palms and soles. -
Involvement in disease
Defects in KRT9 are a cause of palmoplantar keratoderma epidermolytic (EPPK) [MIM:144200]; also abbreviated as EHPPK. EPPK is a dermatological disorder characterized by diffuse thickening of the epidermis on the entire surface of palms and soles sharply bordered with erythematous margins. Some patients may present with knuckle pads, thick pads of skin appearing over the proximal phalangeal joints. -
Sequence similarities
Belongs to the intermediate filament family. - Information by UniProt
