Relevance
|
GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain where it acts at Gamma aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A) receptors. GABA A receptors are ligand gated chloride ion channels. These receptors are believed to be pentameric hetero oligomers, for which 6 subunits are currently known (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon and rho). GABA A receptors mediate the majority of fast inhibitor synaptic transmissions in the brain. Chloride conductance of these channels can be modulated by agents such as benzodiazepines that bind to the GABA A receptor.
