GW182, also known as TNRC6A, is a ubiquitous protein that localises to processing bodies (P-bodies) in the cytoplasm. Mammalian P bodies are also called GW bodies. GW182 plays a role in RNA-mediated gene silencing by micro RNAs (miRNAs) and short interfering RNAs (siRNAs). GW182 is required for miRNA-mediated repression of translation. It also interacts with Ago1-4 and plays a role in siRNA-dependent endonucleocytic cleavage of complementary mRNAs by the Argonaute family. Autoantibodies against GW182 are found in sera from patients with Sjoegren syndrome, ataxia and some sensory neuropathies.
