Hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid (HA) is a high molecular weight unbranched polysaccharide synthesized by a wide variety of organisms from bacteria to mammals, and is a constituent of the extracellular matrix. HA is synthesized by membrane-bound HA synthases (HAS1, HAS2 and HAS3) at the inner surface of the plasma membrane. The three HAS genes show distinct patterns of expression during development and their protein products play significantly different roles in the formation of the HA matrix. The production of HA by HASs has been implicated in heart development, angiogenesis, and stem cell biology.
