Human NEIL1 is the homologs of Escherichia coli Nei. Human NEIL1 is a DNA glycosylase, that phylogenetically belongs to the Fpg/Nei family, primarily found in the bacterial kingdom and is functionally homologous to bacterial Nei. Thymine glycol, a potentially lethal DNA lesion produced by reactive oxygen species, can be removed by DNA glycosylases. The NEIL1 gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 15 that is frequently deleted in human cancers.
