Relevance
|
Nav1.6 mediates the voltage-dependent sodium ion permeability of excitable membranes. Assuming opened or closed conformations in response to the voltage difference across the membrane, the protein forms a sodium-selective channel through which Na(+) ions may pass in accordance with their electrochemical gradient. Defects in Nav1.6 are the cause of motor endplate disease, a recessive neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by lack of signal transmission at the neuromuscular junction, excess preterminal arborization and degeneration of cerebellar Purkinje cells.
