Relevance 

Nurr1 belongs to the Nur77 family of orphan receptors which also includes Nur77 and Nor-1. This family of transcription factors were initially identified in nerve cells, but also play key roles in the development and the effector functions of T lymphocytes and other cells and tissues. Nurr1 is a transcription factor that is expressed in the embryonic ventral midbrain and is critical for the development of dopamine neurons. Nurr1 can promote signaling via its heterodimerization partner, the retinoid X receptor (RXR). RXR ligands can promote the survival of DA neurons via a process that depends on Nurr1-RXR heterodimers. Nurr1 is required during development for the expression of several genes important for dopamine synthesis and function. Nurr1 is probably also important for the maintenance of adult dopaminergic neurons.
