Target
- RelevanceProtein kinase C alpha and protein kinase C beta belong to the protein kinase superfamily, AGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family, PKC subfamily. Both contain 1 AGC kinase C terminal domain, 1 C2 domain, 2 phorbol ester/DAG type zinc fingers and 1 protein kinase domain. They are calcium activated, phospholipid dependent, serine and threonine specific enzymes. PKC alpha and may play a role in cell motility. PKC beta may be a novel component of the NF kappa B signaling axis responsible for the survival and activation of B cells after BCR cross linking. Both are activated by diacylglycerol which in turn phosphorylates a range of cellular proteins and both may also serve as the receptor for phorbol esters, a class of tumor promoters. PKC beta has two named isoforms produced by alternative splicing.
