Relevance

S100 proteins are low molecular weight calcium-binding proteins containing the EF-hand motif which are apparently involved in the regulation of a number of cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation. Originally isolated from brain, members of the S100 family have been shown to be expressed in a large variety of tissues. S100P has been found to be overexpressed in tumors that metastasized during the course of the disease and can be used as a prognostic marker for survival.
