Ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme variant proteins constitute a distinct subfamily within the E2 protein family. They have sequence similarity to other ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes but lack the conserved cysteine residue that is critical for the catalytic activity of E2s.
UBE2V2 forms a heterodimeric complex with UBE2V1, and is able to assemble K63-linked polyubiquitin chains which have novel regulatory roles. These ubiquitin chains have a role in a variety of processes such as DNA repair, endocytosis, polysome stability and signal transduction pathways.
