The Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel (VDAC or mitochondrial Porin) is an outer membrane mitochondrial protein. The VDAC protein is thought to form the major pores through which adenine nucleotides cross the outer mitochondrial membrane. VDAC has also been implicated in the formation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex in apoptotic cells. This complex, formed by VDAC, adenine nucleotide translocator (ANT) and cyclophilin D (CypD) is thought to allow the mitochondria to undergo metabolic uncoupling and irreversible morphologic changes that ultimately destroy the mitochondria during apoptosis. At the mRNA level, the tissue distribution of mitochondrial transport proteins appears to be related to the dependence of each tissue on mitochondrial energy production capacity. As a general rule, these are higher in tissues like skeletal muscle and heart; in liver and pancreas expression levels differ with each protein and in placenta, lung, kidney and brain the expression is lower than in the other tissues.
