Welcome to the Abcam blog

The Abcam charity football match, 2011

Abcam held its second charity football match this year. The game pitched the laboratory building versus the IT department, with the winner donating £250 to the charity of their choice.

The IT department were the victors, in a hard fought close game with the final score being 5 – 3. A full match report can be found below.

The IT team chose the Myotubular Trust. Myotubular Myopathy is a rare muscle condition which affects mostly boys at birth, and sometimes an even rarer form develops later in life affecting both boys and girls. It causes profound muscle weakness. Most critically it affects the muscles that control breathing and swallowing and is a constant threat to life.

Match report

The annual charity Abcam football match was surely one of the closest and most fiercely contested in the history of the competition. As the players walked out to the now hallowed (rubber-crumb astro-) turf the sun was still beating down on their brows and the smell of anticipation was palpable from the three spectators who braved the monolithic Cottenham cage match.

They were not to be disappointed. The IT department, last year's winners, made a sluggish, languid start to the game and were punished by conceding the first goal. They quickly rallied after a delicate one-two. The same combination reproduced an identical effort that sliced through the Lab's defence and sent them into a deserved lead.

The lab rallied with a bruising response and scored two goals that dropped the IT department to their knees. At 3-2 the title looked likely to be moving across the Cambridge Science Park and away from the holders. The IT department's sprightly new goalkeeper made saves that ranged from the spectacular to the miraculous to keep his side in the game, allowing them to counter the constant domination of territory. Two excellent goals from IT gave them the lead, before their star striker looped a ball into the far-corner of the net. Drums beat, horns blew, rattles rattled.

The score, at 5-3, lasted the remaining fifteen minutes of the game. Although the IT's keeper was deservedly voted Man of the Match for his efforts in goal, this didn't tell the story in full; the IT department passed their opponents into a stupor at times and created chance after chance that ultimately rewarded them with hard-fought goals that proved decisive. Despite their bruises, IT emerged from the cage with their title intact.

Chariots of Fire: another speedy performance from Abcam

It's Chariots of Fire time again! A major date in the Cambridge calendar, this charity fundraiser pits 'town' vs 'gown' as Cambridge University colleges, Cambridge businesses, sports clubs and even local pubs compete for bragging rights in a six-lap relay race.

The 1.7 mile race course takes a scenic route through the streets and colleges of Cambridge (inspired by a scene from the award-winning film). Not that Abcam's speedy runners had any time to admire their surroundings!

Abcam teams

Abcam entered one all-male team and two mixed teams and all three put in blistering performances to complete the course in 1:21:58, 1:16:35 and 1:16:02. Better yet, these times are a great improvement on last year, so we are obviously getting fitter!

This year, all the sponsorship money raised by the event will go to Cam-Mind, a local charity supporting mental health sufferers in Cambridgeshire.

Big breakfast at Abcam's new headquarters!

We've moved!

I'm writing this from Abcam's new head office on the Cambridge Science Park! The new building gives us lots more space to expand our operations, including room for increased customer service, scientific support and product storage. For a great start to the first day in the new office, we held a big breakfast to celebrate the successful move. Excellent!

Children in Need

Staff from Abcam's UK office took part in fundraising activities for the BBC's Children in Need appeal and raised over £500.

We held a buffet lunch in our office, and very tasty it was too! The more energetic types entered three teams in the 20th annual Cambridge Fun Run. The teams posted times of 33:30, 35:50 and 43:58 for the 4 x 1.1 mile sponsored relay race.

All the money will be distributed by Children in Need to organizations supporting children aged 18 and under who have mental, physical or sensory disabilities; behavioral or psychological disorders; are living in poverty or situations of deprivation; or suffering through distress, abuse or neglect.

A novel approach to interior design: IF images

The Abcam office just got even more cheery.

We're so happy with the quality of the IF images coming from our lab that we've framed them and hung them up as wall decorations! This is the first time that we've blown the IF images up to such a large size, and we're really proud with how they've turned out.

Chariots of Fire

At the weekend, three teams of hardy Abcam staff took part in the Chariots of Fire race. Inspired by the famous film, this charity fundraiser is a six-strong relay race of a 1.7 mile circuit through the historic Trinity, Kings, and Clare colleges and along the river Cam.
