CD1B and CD1C are members of the CD1 family of major histocompatibility (MHC)-like glycoproteins. CD1 proteins mediate the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells. The CD1B protein localizes to late endosomes and lysosomes via a tyrosine-based motif in the cytoplasmic tail, and requires vesicular acidification to bind lipid antigens. The human genome contains five CD1 family genes, clustered on chromosome 1. CD1 family members are thought to differ in their cellular localization and specificity for lipid ligands.
