RelevanceHuman cytomegalovirus (HHV-5) (Human herpesvirus 5) is a DNA virus. Early antigens regulate viral reproductive cycle and are expressed in the nucleus of infected cells within 3 to 24 hours of infection prior to the commencement of viral DNA replication. Early Antigen can be detected within 12 hours after cell infection and detection of the early-antigen gives a virologically proven diagnosis of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection at an early stage. Conventional culture usually requires several weeks and provides a diagnosis only retrospectively.
CMV infects between 50% and 85% of the adult population. For the vast majority of people, CMV infection is not a serious problem but infection can also be life threatening for patients who are immunocompromised (e.g. patients with HIV or organ transplant recipients).
