I am trying to understand the intricate workings of the mammalian brain. I have worked on how neuronal molecular mechanisms are disturbed in neurodegenerative disorders using mouse models, with cognitive and histological techniques. I study the molecular mechanisms that govern the properties of neural stem cells in vitro. I am trying to tease apart how environmental enrichment might be beneficial to the brain at different ages and in disease conditions such as amyloid pathology.
I hope the upcoming Abcam meeting on Adult Neurogenesis will be a landmark event. It marks the 50th anniversary of the first publication in the field by Altman and Das. I am looking forward to some insightful discussions on how the field is doing and where it should lead to. We need to talk about the big questions facing the topic and also the technical challenges to be overcome. I also hope to hear more about the relevance of adult neurogenesis both as a brain function and a research discipline. With an exciting speaker list, this meeting is bound to ignite many minds and sail over horizons.
