    Methylation of histone H3 at lysine 79 is catalyzed by Dot1 in mammalian cells. Intergenic H3 (mono-methyl K79) is a mark of enhancer regions and may provide unique binding surfaces along the chromatin fibre to stabilize interactions between enhancers and their target promoters. H3 (di-methyl K79) and H3 (tri-methyl K79) are also widespread histone modifications and are associated with transcriptionally active genes. Increased global H3 (methyl K79) is also found to be involved in some pathological processes such as leukemogenesis in humans.
