This image was taken with a 20x objective and is from the stratum oriens of CA1 region of the hippocampus. Occasionally the cell soma and proximal dendrites are also stained (as seen in one cell on the picture) but this is a rare event for CA1 pyramidal cells. Axons projecting from these cells are very nicelly stained and are very weel seen in this area since it is thinner (it is the edge of the culture). The more "diffuse" stainning seen in the stratum pyramidalis (upper part of the image) is due to a greater number of axons present and a greater thickness of the culture. This is not a confocal reconstruction. |
