  • FunctionInhibins and activins inhibit and activate, respectively, the secretion of follitropin by the pituitary gland. Inhibins/activins are involved in regulating a number of diverse functions such as hypothalamic and pituitary hormone secretion, gonadal hormone secretion, germ cell development and maturation, erythroid differentiation, insulin secretion, nerve cell survival, embryonic axial development or bone growth, depending on their subunit composition. Inhibins appear to oppose the functions of activins.
  • Tissue specificityExpressed in benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • Sequence similaritiesBelongs to the TGF-beta family.
  • Cellular localizationSecreted.

  • ab73904 staining Inhibin beta C chain in human embryonal carcinoma tissue sections by Immunohistochemistry (IHC-P - paraformaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections). Tissue was fixed with Bouin's solution and blocked; antigen retrieval was by heat mediation. Samples were incubated with primary antibody (1/1000) for 16 hours at 4°C. An undiluted HRP-conjugated anti-mouse IgG polyclonal was used as the secondary antibody.
