Target

  • RelevanceLa Crosse virus is an etiologic agent for childhood encephalitis in North America. Structurally, the nucleocapsid of this virus is enclosed by a host-derived lipid envelope holding two virion glycoproteins, G1 and G2. These proteins are believed to be responsible for attachment of the virus to cells. Adsorption of La Crosse-Virus to cells in culture is mediated by surface glycoproteins G1 and G2. G1 has been shown to be important for infection in vertebrate hosts, but can be cleaved by the proteases found in the mosquito midgut. It was determined that G2 attaches to mosquito midgut cells and therefore may be the virus attachment protein in the mosquito.
