  • Target

    • RelevanceLittle is known about the normal function of IgD, and few clinical signs or symptoms are associated with its absence. Individuals with low or absent levels of IgD do not appear unusually predisposed to infections. In mice, IgD may substitute for some functions of IgM when IgM is absent. The inheritance of antigenic differences on the constant region of immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chains (CH) results in different allotypes. As such, allotypes are used as genetic markers to distinguish allelic C H genes, the expression of which is codominant in heterozygous mice. Antibodies to allotypic determinants can be made by injecting antibodies from one member of a species into another member of the same species who carries different allotypic determinants.
