RelevanceThe pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative diseases can be attributed to oxidative stress and protein aggregation. Patients of Alzheimer's disease show increased brain levels of neuroprostanes, compounds derived from the oxidation of docosahexaenoic acid. The Neuroketals, in such oxidative environments, are products of the neuroprostane pathway and are a species of highly reactive gamma-ketoaldehydes that rapidly adduct to lysine residues of proteins, causing cross-linking.
