Penicillinase is a beta-lactamase, showing specificity for penicillins by hydrolysing the beta-lactam ring. Beta lactamases play a significant role in the high resistance of certain organinsms to penicillins, cephalosporins, cephamycins and carbapenems. These antibiotics have a common element in their molecular structure: a four-atom ring known as a beta-lactam. The lactamase enzyme breaks that ring open, deactivating the molecule's antibacterial properties. Penicillinase resistant ß lactams have been developed, such as methicillin, although there is widespread resistance to these now also (MRSA).
