RelevancePoliovirus, the causative agent of poliomyelitis, was first isolated nearly 100 years ago. It may infect the nervous system and cause lasting paralysis. Poliovirus is a single stranded RNA virus and a member of the Picornavirus family. It has three strains: Poliovirus 1, 2 and 3. Replication of poliovirus RNA is accomplished by the error-prone viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. The cell receptor for poliovirus is CD155.
