  • Function
    Hydrolyzes specifically phosphatidic acid (PA) to produce 2-acyl lysophosphatidic acid (LPA; a potent bioactive lipid mediator) and fatty acid. Does not hydrolyze other phospholipids, like phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) or triacylglycerol (TG).
  • Tissue specificity
    Expressed in testis. Expressed exclusively at the connecting piece of the sperm.
  • Involvement in disease
    Defects in LIPI may be a cause of susceptibility to familial hypertriglyceridemia (FHTR)[MIM:145750]. Familial hypertriglyceridemia is a common inherited disorder in which the concentration of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) is elevated in the plasma. This leads to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, and pancreatitis.
