G protein beta1/gamma2 subunit-interacting factor 1
Microtubule associated protein tau
Microtubule associated protein tau, isoform 4
Neurofibrillary tangle protein
Paired helical filament-tau
RelevanceTau383 is a memeber of the family of neuronal microtubule-associated proteins. Tau promotes assembly and stabilizes neuronal microtubules under normal physiological conditions, but under pathological conditions can also undergo modifications such as hyperphosphorylation, that can result in the generation of aberrant aggregates such as found in neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease. Six isoforms have been found that differ from each other in having either 3 or 4 binding repeats (R) of 31-32 amino acids, and from zero to 3 amino terminal inserts (N) of 29 amino acids each.
Cellular localizationCytoplasm; cytosol. Cell membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Cytoplasmic side. Cytoplasm; cytoskeleton. Cell projection; axon. Note: Mostly found in the axons of neurons, in the cytosol and in association with plasma membrane components
