Spindle-E or spn-E encodes a putative DEAD-box helicase, spn-E, which has been shown to be required for RNAi in Drosophila oocytes. Mutations in the aubergine and spindle-E genes, members of the Argonaute and RNA helicase gene families, respectively, impair silencing by eliminating the short Su(Ste) RNA, but have no effect on microRNA production
Mutations in Piwi, Aubergine, or Spindle-E, which encode RNAi components result in reduction of H3 Lys9 methylation and delocalization of HP1 and HP2. RNAi is activated during Drosophila oocyte maturation in a manner dependent on aubergine (the Argonaute protein) and spindle-E.
