Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of staph infections. It is a spherical bacterium, and is frequently part of the skin flora found in the nose and on skin. S. aureus can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infections, such as pimples, impetigo, boils, cellulitis folliculitis, furuncles, carbuncles, scalded skin syndrome and abscesses, to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome and septicemia. Methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) can cause serious sepsis and enteritis.
Coagulase is an enzyme produced by Staphylococcus aureus that converts fibrinogen to fibrin, and is used in the laboratory to distinguish between different types of Staphylococcus isolates. This target relates to S. aureus serotype I coagulase.
