Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a non-spore forming gram negative bacillus with monopolar flagella. This bacterium is frequently isolated from estuarine and marine environments and is the leading cause of seafood-associated gastroenteritis in the United States. Serological types are determined in combination with somatic antigens.
