Function
Ligand for the GFR-alpha-3-RET receptor complex but can also activate the GFR-alpha-1-RET receptor complex. Supports the survival of sensory and sympathetic peripheral neurons in culture and also supports the survival of dopaminergic neurons of the ventral mid-brain. -
Tissue specificity
Ubiquitous. Expressed at high levels in peripheral tissues including prostate, placenta, pancreas, heart, kidney, pituitary gland, lung and testis. Expressed at low levels in the brain. -
Sequence similarities
Belongs to the TGF-beta family. GDNF subfamily. -
Developmental stage
Expressed during embryogenesis. High level expression seen in fetal kidney and lung while a low level expression seen in the fetal brain. -
Cellular localization
Secreted. - Information by UniProt

Immunohistochemical analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human cerebral cortex tissue sections from Alzheimer's disease patients labeling Artemin with ab205564 at 5 µg/mL. DAB was used for visualization. Sections were counterstained with toluidine blue.
-
Immunofluorescence analysis of GFRA3-Ret51 receptor complex bound Artemin. Human U2OS cells were transfected with GFRa3-Ret51 expression vector followed by treatment with 100 nM Artemin. Artemin bound to the GFRa3-Ret51 receptor complex was detected with ab205564 at 20 µg/mL. Goat anti-mouse Dylight 488 conjugated antibody (1 µg/mL) was used as secondary antibody. For nuclear staining DAPI was used. Left image; Artemin bound to the GFRa3-Ret51 receptor complex; Right image; Negative control - GFRa3-Ret51 receptor expressing U2OS cells.
