Relevance
ß-casomorphin (ß-CM) is an exogenous bioactive peptide derived from casein, a major protein in milk and milk products, which has opioid activity. The circulation of this peptide into children’s immature central nervous system is believed to be related with the “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)”. It is believed that this peptide produces an inhibitory effect in the respiratory centre in the brain stem, and that this leads to apnea and death. -
