Why the small vials?
It was our pioneering focus on continuous improvement in delivery and service which lead to investment in automated storage units called comPOUND in 2006.
Like all automated storage solutions, these highly efficient and accurate units operate using bar-coded vials of a defined size, typically they are used by pharma and biobanks for compound storage.
This early adoption of this technology is unique in our field and provides you with a number of benefits:
- You can expect next day delivery across our large range of products as 99% of our top selling product are in stock globally and available for same day dispatch if orders are received before the regional cut off time (4pm-8pm).
- There is a reduced risk of leakage as the vials are made of higher grade plastic than standard tubes. The caps, which are tightened with torque wrenches rather than by hand, feature an integral O-ring resulting in a tighter seal.
- We have been able to optimize the tube design working with the manufacturer to bring you light sensitive products in amber tubes.
- The storage is environmentally efficient as the comPOUND unit takes the footprint of 1.5x -80 freezers and stores more than 10 times number of tubes than the freezer.

We know that many researchers in labs are using standard Eppendorf racks, so we designed the popular Abcam re-usable bricks to accommodate both sizes of vials.
We also hunted down where you can buy inserts for tubes to use in centrifuges or inserts to go on lids of tubes.
