              Updated December 15, 2020

Vimentin is a type III intermediate filament protein that anchors and supports organelles within the cytosol of mesenchymal cells. Expression of vimentin is upregulated during epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process that occurs during neural development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. Due to its diverse role within the cell, vimentin can be studied in many contexts ranging from cancer to cytoskeletal dynamics.
