  • Function
    Integrin alpha-M/beta-2 is implicated in various adhesive interactions of monocytes, macrophages and granulocytes as well as in mediating the uptake of complement-coated particles. It is identical with CR-3, the receptor for the iC3b fragment of the third complement component. It probably recognizes the R-G-D peptide in C3b. Integrin alpha-M/beta-2 is also a receptor for fibrinogen, factor X and ICAM1. It recognizes P1 and P2 peptides of fibrinogen gamma chain.

    Predominantly expressed in monocytes and granulocytes.
  • Involvement in disease
    Genetic variations in ITGAM has been associated with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus type 6 (SLEB6) [MIM:609939]. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, inflammatory and often febrile multisystemic disorder of connective tissue. It affects principally the skin, joints, kidneys and serosal membranes. It is thought to represent a failure of the regulatory mechanisms of the autoimmune system.

  • NR8383, rat macrophage cells, were used for a flow cytometry analysis with ab8879 (CD11b) antibody that binds the rat Mac-1 alpha subunit (CD11b). Cells were treated with ab8879 at a 1:50 dilution and subsequently with anti-murine IgG FITC. A 94% shift is seen as compared to the non-treated control.

  • ab8879 staining CD11b in mixed rat spinal cord cultures on astrocytes by ICC/IF (Immunocytochemistry/immunoflurescence). Cells were live stained. Samples were incubated with primary antibody (1/200 in DMEM) for 20 minutes. An Alexa Fluor®488-conjugated Rat anti-rabbit IgG1 monoclonal (1/600) was used as the secondary antibody.

  • IHC - Wholemount of rat retina tissue labelling CD11b (white) with ab8879. Sample was incubated with primary antibody (1/100 in PBS) for 24 hours at 4°C. An Alexa Fluor® 647-conjugated Goat anti-mouse IgG monoclonal (1/1000) was used as the secondary antibody. Blue - DAPI.

According to current literature, both CD11b and CD11c are suitable markers for microglia (neuronal macrophages).

However, please note that CD11b is also expressed in granulocytes, monocytes, NK cells, T cells, B cells and dendritic cells.

CD11c is also expressed in monocytes, macrophages, granulocytes, T cell and B cell subsets.
