  • Function
    Ceruloplasmin is a blue, copper-binding (6-7 atoms per molecule) glycoprotein. It has ferroxidase activity oxidizing Fe(2+) to Fe(3+) without releasing radical oxygen species. It is involved in iron transport across the cell membrane.
  • Tissue specificity
    Expressed by the liver and secreted in plasma.
  • Involvement in disease
    Defects in CP are the cause of aceruloplasminemia (ACERULOP) [MIM:604290]. It is an autosomal recessive disorder of iron metabolism characterized by iron accumulation in the brain as well as visceral organs. Clinical features consist of the triad of retinal degeneration, diabetes mellitus and neurological disturbances.
    Note=Ceruloplasmin levels are decreased in Wilson disease, in which copper cannot be incorporated into ceruloplasmin in liver because of defects in the copper-transporting ATPase 2.

  • ab110449 staining ceruloplasmin in astroglial cells from rat by ICC/IF (Immunocytochemistry/immunofluorescence).  Cells were fixed with paraformaldehyde, permeabilized with 0.3% Triton X-100 in 0.1% PBS and blocked with 10% serum for 30 minutes at 24°C. Samples were incubated with primary antibody for 4 hours at 24°C. An undiluted Alexa Fluor® 488-conjugated Donkey polyclonal was used as the secondary antibody.

  • Adult rat was perfused with 4% PFA in 0.1M PBS. Fluorescent staining was performed in duodenum sections with anti-Ceruloplasmin (ab110449) primary and Alexa 488 conjugated secondary antibody. This antibody stained gut enterocytes. Nucleus stained with Hoechst at high power magnification.
