Functional Studies - Ornithine Assay Kit (Fluorometric) (AB252903)
Estimations of Ornithine in human serum sample (10 μL) and rat liver (62 μg protein).
Estimations of Ornithine in human serum sample (10 μL) and rat liver (62 μg protein). Ornithine concentrations were 82.1 μM in human serum sample, and 14.5 pmol/μg-protein in rat liver. Assays were perfromed following the kit protocol.

Functional Studies - Ornithine Assay Kit (Fluorometric) (AB252903)
Specificity of the detection of Ornithine over other amino acids. Other amino acids were tested at a 10-fold molar excess (each aa : 10nmol) vs Ornithine (1 nmol).
Product details
The Ornithine Assay Kit (Fluorometric) (ab252903) provides a rapid, specific, and easy method for the measurement of total ornithine concentrations in a wide variety of biological samples. In this enzyme-based assay, ornithine is converted into a series of intermediates, which will further react with a probe producing a stable fluorometric signal (Ex/Em = 535/587nm). The kit is simple to use, sensitive and high-throughput adaptable and can detect as low as 50 pmol/well of ornithine in biological samples.
This product is manufactured by BioVision, an Abcam company and was previously called K939 Ornithine Assay Kit (Fluorometric). K939-100 is the same size as the 100 test size of ab252903.

Biological function summary
Ornithine operates as an integral part of the urea cycle facilitating the conversion of ammonia into urea. Within this cycle it serves as a substrate for the enzyme ornithine transcarbamylase leading to the production of citrulline. This role situates ornithine within a complex cycle important for nitrogen disposal. Beyond the liver ornithine levels may impact tissues linked to high protein turnover as it interfaces with other amino acids like arginine and citrulline in protein metabolism.
Pathways
Ornithine figures prominently in two main pathways: the urea cycle and the polyamine biosynthesis pathway. Within the urea cycle it closely relates to enzymes like carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I and ornithine transcarbamylase. This cycle interfaces with pathways responsible for amino acid breakdown. In the polyamine biosynthesis pathway ornithine converts into putrescine a precursor for polyamines such as spermidine and spermine linking to pathways that regulate cell growth and differentiation.
