Product details

TMRM Assay Kit (Mitochondrial Membrane Potential) ab228569 is designed to quantify changes in mitochondrial membrane potential in living cells using flow cytometry, fluorescence plate reader, or fluorescence microscopy. It uses the red-fluorescent probe TMRM (tetramethylrhodamine, methyl ester) that localizes in mitochondria and detects mitochondrial membrane depolarization.

TMRE is the ethyl ester of tetramethylrhodamine and is a close equivalent of TMRM. TMRE is used about 3 times more than TMRM for mitochondrial membrane potential assays.

TMRM staining is used to monitor mitochondrial function. When accumulated in a negatively charge polarized mitochondria, TMRM fluoresces orange. When mitochondrial membrane potential collapses in apoptotic or metabolically stressed cells, the TMRM reagent is dispersed throughout the cell cytosol and fluorescence levels drop dramatically. This kit provides enough reagents to analyze 5 x 96 wells (500 samples).
