MW 582.6 Da. Aminoglycoside antibiotic agent effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and mycoplasma. Originally purified from the bacterium Streptomyces kanamyceticus. Binds to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibits translocation, and elicits miscoding. Often used to select for bacteria which have been successfully transformed with a plasmid conferring kanamycin resistance.
