Activity summary

Interferon beta 1 (Ifnb1) also known as IFN-β is an important protein in the immune system. It has a mass of around 20 kDa and is primarily expressed in fibroblasts and monocytes. This protein functions as a type I interferon involved in the regulation of immune responses against pathogens especially viruses. Ifnb1 acts to limit viral replication by inducing the expression of antiviral proteins within infected and neighboring cells.

Biological function summary

Ifnb1 is an important player in the immune defense system. It is involved in enhancing the activity of immune cells such as natural killer cells and macrophages. The protein is not part of a complex but interacts with receptors on the cell surface to trigger signaling pathways. Its antiviral activities include the inhibition of viral protein synthesis and enhancement of antigen presentation to T cells making it important for innate and adaptive immunity.

Pathways

Ifnb1 is integral in the JAK-STAT signaling pathway which is important for relaying information from specific cytokines to the cell nucleus. This pathway includes proteins like JAK1 and STAT1 which interact with Ifnb1 to modulate the transcription of genes involved in immune responses. Additionally Ifnb1 is involved in the interferon regulatory pathways working with other type I interferons to control viral infections and modulate the immune response.

Associated diseases and disorders

Ifnb1 is linked to multiple sclerosis and hepatitis C. In multiple sclerosis Ifnb1 modulates the immune response to reduce inflammation and prevent the progression of the disease. Its connection to hepatitis C involves decreasing viral replication and improving liver health. Proteins such as Hepatitis C virus NS5A and immune system component major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are associated with Ifnb1's actions in these disorders.
