Hsp90 also known as Heat Shock Protein 90 is a chaperone protein with a molecular mass of approximately 90 kDa. It is expressed in the cytosol of most cells and plays a mechanical role in stabilizing and folding newly synthesized proteins. Hsp90 participates heavily in protein refolding which helps maintain protein homeostasis under stress conditions. Its function is essential for the normal functioning of many cellular processes.
Biological function summary

Hsp90 fulfills an important role in cellular stress responses and is a central component of the heat shock protein signaling pathway. It forms complexes with co-chaperones which enhance its client protein binding and ATPase activity. Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) also known as Prostaglandin-Endoperoxide Synthase 2 is another well-known protein related to inflammation processes and is often studied together with Hsp90 for various cellular functions.

Pathways

Hsp90 represents a pivotal element within pathways that regulate cell growth and apoptosis. It interacts with Src a tyrosine-protein kinase that plays a role in signal transduction pathways associated with cancer. Hsp90 engages in pathways like the Akt signaling pathway affecting cellular proliferation and survival. Src's relation to this pathway highlights its influence on similar processes within cells.

Hsp90 has relevance in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In cancer the overexpression of Hsp90 stabilizes oncogenic proteins which promotes tumor progression. Src kinase often partners with Hsp90 in enhancing the malignancy of cancer cells. In neurodegenerative diseases the relationship between Hsp90 and CBR1 (Carbonyl Reductase 1) becomes prominent as both proteins impact oxidative stress response pathways that exacerbate disease progression.
