C13orf31 also known as FAM131B is a protein encoded by the gene C13orf31 with a mass of approximately 25 kDa. This protein is expressed in various tissues with a noticeable presence in the brain and testis. Mechanically C13orf31 functions as part of cellular signaling pathways though its exact role remains to be fully understood. Studies have indicated that it may be involved in cellular response mechanisms contributing to maintaining cellular homeostasis.
The protein plays an essential role in cellular processes that include signal transduction and transcription regulation. C13orf31 participates as part of a larger protein complex that guides these processes within the cell. It interacts with several candidate proteins indicating its potential importance in nucleus-associated functions and possibly affecting transcriptional control.
C13orf31 operates within the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway a pathway significant for cell growth and survival. It associates with proteins like AKT1 suggesting that C13orf31 may influence the pathway's outcome especially in cellular growth and survival contexts. Additionally C13orf31 might connect to elements of the MAPK pathway indicating its possible involvement in cellular responses to environmental stress.
Researchers have found links between C13orf31 and certain cancers specifically thyroid cancer. It may work in tandem with RET a proto-oncogene to promote oncogenic activity. Furthermore alterations in C13orf31 expression levels have been observed in several neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease where it potentially interacts with tau proteins influencing tau pathology and neurodegeneration.
