Angiotensin I also known as Ang I acts as a precursor in the renin-angiotensin system. Its molecular mass is approximately 1296.5 Da. Angiotensin I originates from the cleavage of angiotensinogen by the enzyme renin primarily in the liver. This decapeptide circulates in the bloodstream and serves as a substrate for further enzymatic reactions. Although it itself does not have known biological activity its conversion to angiotensin II enhances its significance.
Biological function summary

The conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II is an important step. This reaction occurs in the lungs facilitated by the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II has much greater activity and plays an important role in increasing blood pressure and regulating blood volume. Angiotensin I serves as an important precursor member but not an active component of this system and enemies an intricate balance with other components like prorenin and renin.

Angiotensin I's role is central in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
