Notes

Abcam's anti-Adenovirus IgA Human in vitro ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit is designed for the accurate qualitative measurement of IgA class antibodies against Adenovirus in Human serum and plasma.

A 96-well plate has been precoated with Adenovirus antigens to bind cognate antibodies. Controls or test samples are added to the wells and incubated. Following washing, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelled anti-Human IgA conjugate is added to the wells, which binds to the immobilized Adenovirus-specific antibodies. TMB is then catalyzed by the HRP to produce a blue color product that changes to yellow after adding an acidic stop solution. The density of yellow coloration is directly proportional to the amount of Adenovirus IgA sample captured in plate.

Activity summary

Adenovirus IgA is an immunoglobulin that specifically targets adenovirus infections. It acts in the mucosal immune system serving as a first line of defense by neutralizing pathogens. Alternate names for IgA include immunoglobulin A. While the precise mass of adenovirus-specific IgA can vary human IgA is approximately 160 kDa. The protein is expressed in mucosal regions such as the intestines and respiratory tract as well as in various secretions like saliva and tears.

Biological function summary

Adenovirus IgA neutralizes adenoviruses by binding to their surface and preventing their entry into host cells. This action occurs in mucosal membranes where IgA forms part of a larger immune complex that also includes secretory components and the J-chain. It provides protection against viral infections by preventing virus replication and spread within the body. Furthermore the interaction between Adenovirus IgA and the adenovirus particle signals for virus removal via immune effector functions including phagocytosis.

Pathways

The immune response mechanism involving Adenovirus IgA is integral to the mucosal immune pathway and the alternative complement pathway. In the mucosal immune response IgA works closely with secretory components and transports across epithelial cells preventing pathogens from accessing systemic circulation. In the alternative complement pathway IgA can interact with proteins such as complement component 3 modulating immune responses and playing roles in opsonization and microbial defense.

Associated diseases and disorders

Adenovirus IgA is of interest in respiratory infections and adenovirus-related conjunctivitis. In respiratory infections insufficient IgA production may lead to more severe disease manifestations due to inadequate mucosal immunity. For adenovirus-related conjunctivitis Adenovirus IgA directly binds the viral particles in ocular secretions preventing the progression of infection. Its connection to other immune proteins like IgM or IgG suggests a cooperative role in offering broader antibody-mediated responses during complex immune challenges.
