Product details
Abcam's anti-Bordetella pertussis IgM Human in vitro ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit is designed for the accurate qualitative measurement of IgM class antibodies against Bordetella pertussis in Human serum and plasma.
A 96-well plate has been precoated with Bordetella pertussis antigens to bind cognate antibodies. Controls or test samples are added to the wells and incubated. Following washing, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelled anti-Human IgM conjugate is added to the wells, which binds to the immobilized Bordetella pertussis-specific antibodies. TMB is then catalyzed by the HRP to produce a blue color product that changes to yellow after adding an acidic stop solution. The density of yellow coloration is directly proportional to the amount of Bordetella pertussis IgM sample captured in plate.

Biological function summary
Bordetella pertussis IgM binds to antigens on the surface of Bordetella pertussis facilitating the elimination of the bacteria by the immune system. While not part of a larger protein complex they activate the complement system enhancing phagocytosis and lysing the bacteria. Their role is critical in initial infection control providing insights into infection dynamics and immune status of the host against this bacterium.
Pathways
Bordetella pertussis IgM influences the complement activation classical pathway an important component of the immune defense and is involved in the antibody-mediated immune response pathway. These pathways involve interactions with various immune proteins including complement proteins like C1q which facilitate the removal of the pathogen. The fast response of IgM antibodies aids in the containment and resolution of the infection prior to the activation of IgG antibodies which are more prevalent in long-term immunity.
