Notes

Abcam's anti-Epstein Barr virus (EBV-VCA) IgM Human in vitro ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit is designed for the accurate qualitative measurement of IgM class antibodies against Epstein Barr virus in Human serum and plasma.

A 96-well plate has been precoated with Epstein Barr virus antigens to bind cognate antibodies. Controls or test samples are added to the wells and incubated. Following washing, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelled anti-Human IgM conjugate is added to the wells, which binds to the immobilized Epstein Barr virus-specific antibodies. TMB is then catalyzed by the HRP to produce a blue color product that changes to yellow after adding an acidic stop solution. The density of yellow coloration is directly proportional to the amount of Epstein Barr virus IgM sample captured in plate.

Activity summary

The target Epstein-Barr Virus (VCA) IgM also known as EBV IgM VCA IgM or EBV capsid IgM serves as an early serological marker for Epstein-Barr Virus infections. This immunoglobulin is directed against the viral capsid antigen (VCA) and typically appears during the acute phase of infection. EBV VCA IgM is expressed on the surface of B cells and in the bloodstream. Though its molecular mass can vary IgM generally weighs around 950 kDa consisting of heavy and light chains forming a pentamer structure.

Biological function summary

EBV VCA IgM is integral to the body's initial immune response against the Epstein-Barr Virus. It is not part of a larger protein complex but operates independently as an antibody that detects viral antigens. It binds to the Epstein-Barr early antigens facilitating neutralization and clearance of the virus. Its presence indicates a recent EBV infection and is important for diagnosing infectious mononucleosis commonly called mono.

Pathways

EBV VCA IgM is involved in the immune response pathways particularly humoral immune processes. This antibody participates in the activation of the complement cascade enhancing opsonization and phagocytosis of the virus by immune cells. It closely relates to another antibody EBV IgG which appears later in the infection cycle indicating past exposure and ongoing immune response maintenance.

Associated diseases and disorders

EBV VCA IgM is strongly associated with infectious mononucleosis and can also play a role in certain autoimmune conditions triggered by EBV infection. The early presence of this IgM antibody often precedes the development of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in immunocompromised individuals. EBV VCA IgM interactions with B cells contribute to the pathogenesis pointing towards its importance in viral-mediated disease progression.
