Glypican 5 (GPC5) is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan that is part of the glypican family. This protein weighs about 125 kDa. It is found mainly in the central nervous system and lung tissues. Glypicans including GPC5 are bound to the cell membrane via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor playing roles in cellular signaling at the cell surface.
Biological function summary

Glypican 5 modulates cell growth and differentiation by interacting with growth factors and morphogens acting as a coreceptor. It collaborates with heparan sulfate chains enabling the binding of signaling molecules at the cell surface. GPC5 does not work alone; it forms complexes with extracellular matrix components to influence cellular behavior.
